Writer's cramp?

It's been a very long while since I've posted anything on my blog! I'm calling it writer's cramp. I won't go into details of why I've had such a long duration of writer's cramp, but I'm here now. Not sure why I picked today to be the day I got back to it either, it just happened. So hello again everyone!

I'm looking forward to the joyous season of giving and I'm hoping I'll be able to give more than I receive. To start off my spirit of giving, I have a promotion at my Artfire Studio, http://www.artfire.com/users/Felt4Ewe . Feel free to check it out.

For Thanksgiving, I will be working my "real" job, so I'm cooking our bird on Tuesday, with all the trimmings. I LOVE Thanksgiving dinner, and always make plenty so it can be repeated several times and dinner guests can take some home with them. On Monday I'll do lots of prep work, and bake pumpkin and apple pies. We'll have a couple of friends joining us for Thanksgiving dinner, and I am so grateful that I can share this wonderful meal with them. I wish that our families were able to be here, but the memories of a multitude of Thanksgivings shared with all of them will be on my mind this year; they are not forgotten!

I hope for all to have a happily memorable Thanksgiving this year.

Moving forward, I'll be writing about the giving spirit of the season. It may be about things I'm doing, or about the giving spirit of others that I appreciate. Many of you out there will be in the giving spirit as well, and I'd love to hear about how you're devoting yourselves to the spirit of giving this season. Joyful, Joyful giving to all!

Useful information about nuno felting

Nuno felting is a wet felting technique which incorporates other fibers in addition to wool. Some common fabrics used in nuno felting include cotton gauze or muslin and silk gauze, because wool felts into these fabrics very well. When you use other fabrics with felting, it makes a drapable, soft, yet durable fabric, and you don't need a large amount of wool as it can be laid in wisps and doesn't have to fully cover the fabric used. You can even have holes in the finished piece, such as the "cobweb" felt drape I made(photo above), using cotton gauze and wool.

The instructions use a cotton muslin, but using silk you can follow the same process. Be aware that along with time for laying out your wool and silk, there is quite a lot of time needed for felting too. If you don't have a flat surface long enough to lay it all out, you can lay out sections and roll up in the bubble wrap, then hand felt sections and roll the other direction. Once you have done the felting with your hands, you can follow the rolling up and rolling to felt. Also if you don't have the voile that is mentioned in the instructions, you can lay a piece of bed sheet on top of your wool and fabric layers. I've done that and it works quite well. You can also lay a piece of bed sheet on the bubble wrap, and draw the size of the silk onto it so it will be easier to lay out the bottom layers of wool in the proper place. The project will shrink so be aware of that also. If you have a large amount of the silk, you can always use a small piece to play with and test shrinkage so you'll know better how the larger project will progress. Notice that with nuno felting a washboard isn't needed, as the "throwing" will full the felt. When you are first working the wool and silk with your hands, pay attention to the edges, and push in any wisps of wool, rubbing with your fingers to felt the edges well. The instructions in the link are with wool on both sides of the silk, but you can do it with the wool on only one side if you wish. The wonderful thing as always, is the freedom of creativity, and seeing your creation once completed. Oftentimes the finished nuno felt will crinkle or bubble, and give a wonderful texture along with the color and design. You can also add fringe, beads, or other embellishments.

Is Congress the ultimate bureaucracy?

After listening to news today about the meeting President Obama had with members of our legislative branch, I'm beginning to think that Congress is the ultimate bureaucracy. President Obama appears to be doing his part to be non-partisan, to consider all ideas and come up with the best plan to help improve our ailing and failing economy. He talked, also listened, and even took envelopes which contained specific ideas Congress members would like to see happen with the stimulus package. Much of what came out of that meeting is under consideration by the Obama administration. But what I've seen come from Congress, is that the members seemed to be able to have meaningful discussion with President Obama, but they don't seem to be able to do this amongst fellow members. They all talk, it seems no one listens, and then in the end they still disagree. Democrats write legislation and seem to expect the Republicans to just go along and approve it. The Republicans automatically disapprove because they weren't in on the writing of the bill, or because none of their ideas or concerns were considered. So why do they even discuss it? What are they accomplishing? Both parties must change their ways, must begin to hear each other, must be willing to bend. I just wonder what is going on in their minds and behind closed doors that we don't hear. Who are they representing? I don't feel very well represented by Congress. How about you?

And so I found this saying that sums up my view of Congress today:

I say the word "Congress" can very easily be inserted to replace the word "bureaucracy", and have the same impact.

There are lots of fiber arts groups, and some for just needle felters, but not so many for all felters. I decided we should have a place to share our sites. It's pretty bare right now, but I'm sure it will grow, and I'll get to adding photos soon.

Obama to hold neighborhood inaugural ball!

This is so awesome. President-elect Obama is holding a neighborhood inaugural ball on Jan 20th. at the Washington Convention Center. Obama will be attending this event and several others as well. This is the first time an inaugural ball has been open to the public, and the tickets will be either free or at a very affordable cost. Just another sign that Obama wants all Americans to be included, and this will be a wonderful beginning to welcome him as our President. Unfortunately, I won't be in attendance, but I'm still very thrilled that it will be happening this way. One of my Art Fire friends recently completed a tutorial for making Chainmaille. I never really knew what it was, or how it worked. I decided to take a look, and I'm so glad I did! Red Panda explained what chainmaille is, and gave a very clear succinct tutorial to get you started, along with really wonderful photos that make everything very understandable. If I had the materials, I could sit down and make chainmaille right now, just from her tutorial. Take a look at Red Panda's Chaimaille tutorial now. You'll be able to do chainmaille in no time!

Thank you Red Panda for enlightening me, and perhaps one day I'll get the materials and start doing this wonderful craft!

It's been a very eventful year for me, and I'm sure for many of you as well. I've been through many highs and lows, suffered through tremendously stressful times, both emotionally and economically. The stress and economic issues however, brought me back to my love of felting, and for that I am grateful. I still have my health, I've found new employment for a more regular income, and I've been reaching out into new places, most especially networking on the internet. My felting sales haven't taken off exactly, but I feel as though I'm progressing with spreading the word, and I'm also enjoying following my photography yen.

Tonight it's cold, snowy and blowing here in Clarksville, NY, and I'm due for work at 7am, so I'm in for the night, and likely will sleep through the final moments of this momentous year.

I'm not a new year's resolution type of person, but if you are, I hope you will accomplish what you set out to do. I have many goals, but my goals change throughout the year, so my plans are to do my best to have fun while growing and staying healthy. There is much promise in the year ahead, with the change in the US Presidency and the new administration, may our nation heal and find the kind of leadership we need at home and abroad.

Here's a toast to everyone, for a joyous, healthy, prosperous and growing New Year! Cheers!

Did you know needle felting can be used for repairs?

One of my very first major projects in wet felting was a large purse, with two pockets, a nice sized flap with two felted buttonholes and felted buttons on the purse, and a braided felted rope strap. I lined it also. I've been carrying this purse non-stop since I finished it, and it was beginning to show "wear." Portions of the purse started to wear through, and the braids on the strap started fraying a bit. So a few weeks back I took time to repair it with needle felting. Luckily I still had spare wool in the same colors I used on the purse. Now it looks like new! You can add wool to an item, and needle felt it to fix holes or worn spots, and to firm up anything that may have become weak. There are other repairs you can do with needle felting as well, such as repairing holes in socks (I would rather needle felt than sew any day!), and if you complete a wet felting project only to find an area that is not thick enough, or has a hole, you can needle felt to fix that also. Repair holes in sweaters, coats and blankets and needle felt designs over large areas that are in need of repair, so it would add flair and fix at the same time. Have a hole in an item of clothing? You can needle felt designs on other some non-wool fabrics too to repair holes or worn areas. Test a hidden spot, and if it works, you're in business. Revive and update! Try needle felting to repair a child's favorite stuffed animal that has worn spots or holes or to seal torn seams. If you make a nuno felt project, a 40 gauge felting needle can be used to fix up edges or add more design. Doll makers can use needle felting to repair dreadlocks (will even repair human dreadlocks, or make loops in dreadlocks. Just don't needle your head!), or some other cloth doll parts. In some cases, depending on the item, you can fold your wool or pinch it together with your fingers, and then needle felt to repair. What I've found with felting is the more you play with it, the more ways you find to use it and do it! Happy Felting!

Art Fire buyer/seller feature

As I had my coffee this morning, and started checking out my shops, and status, I realized there's a feature on Art Fire that is likely being overlooked for the most part by buyers and sellers there. This wonderful new source of handmade goods offers the option for sellers to allow buyers to make offers on their listed products. In other words, when a buyer visits, if the seller has selected this option in their listings, the buyer can make an offer as to an amount they would like to pay for the items. It's a unique option in comparison to Etsy, and because it's optional, it provides a lot of flexibility for the seller. I think this feature adds to the buyer experience as well. We Art Fire artisans need to make this feature better known to those we are promoting to.

NFEST

A couple of days ago, I joined the Etsy NFEST team (Needle Felt Etsy Street Team). Although I have been needle felting for quite a while, I held back on joining this team, because I thought I had too many other things I was involved in and dealing with. I reconsidered recently, as there are quite a few NFEST members who are my friends on Facebook, and whose felted works I see as an inspiration to me. There's tremendous talent amongst this group, and I decided I wanted to be part of it, and I hope to share and learn, support and receive support for the wonderful craft of needle felting! Since things in my schedule are about to change drastically as of next week, I put aside my large upcycled sweater project, and I'm working on a smaller Christmas project, then I'll be on to trying to get as many Christmas cookies baked as possible before Monday. I love the baking, eating, and sharing my cookies!

Yesterday I visited my 82 yr old mom, my youngest son, Joe, and my sister Judy and her clan. We had a nice visit and it may be the only family gathering I'll be able to attend until after Christmas, so I cherished the time with them. I'm hopeful that I'll have one day between Christmas and New Years to visit again at my mom's and see other family and especially my daughter, Veronica, who will be in from Florida, and my other son, Damon, and his family (with my two wonderful granddaughters, and another grandchild on the way.) Life has changed so much, and we all struggle with responsibilities while trying to stay connected and see each other as much as we can. I hope everyone else has time to share with their families too!

What I did vs what I wanted to do

Today was productive, in a sorta kinda way. I did tons of paperwork/recordkeeping, laundry, dishes, and cleaned out the fridge of those oldy n'moldy devils that lurked. That's productive, sorta, right?

What I wanted to do was to continue my "large" needle/wet felting upcycled-fulled wool sweater, multi-piece project, and get the special gift for my Best Customer Award done. So here I am, late in the day, having done something, but not having done what I really wanted to do. And tomorrow, I have "errands" that must be done, and the next day I hope to visit my son who's in town (well 80 miles or so from me.) So that means by Wednesday I might get to what I call "progress" on my projects. Plus there are a couple of smaller projects that I need to get pics of so I can put them up.

I'm not sure I'll be baking many Christmas cookies this year. I usually have lots of kinds, and lots of each kind. Just not sure I'm going to BE THERE this year.

Well, for now, until I go to bed, I'm going to do a little of the felting. Hopefully I'll get more than 3.5 hrs of sleep tonight. Last night I was up all night, and finally retired for sleep at 8am! The coffee is on a timer, and it was brewing just before I turned in. Sheesh. Didn't get anything done except for lots of mulling things over in my head. Wasted time!

Found a great blog for needle felters!

If you're into needle felting (and I certainly am), this is a great site to visit for inspiration. Perhaps one day I'll be able to create characters like Karen's! If you are unfamiliar with needle felting, it is a fairly recent (1980's) addition to felting methods, and involves intermingling wool fibers with barbed needles, creating one-of-a-kind sculptures or felted fiber. If you try it, you'll likely be "hooked" almost immediately. A great way to spend time while you're listening to music, riding a bus, sitting with a friend, etc. You'll be amazed at once at what a fluff of loose wool fiber and a barbed needle can do while in your hands!

OJ Simpson - Concurrent and Consecutive sentences

Today was a "markable" day, the day that OJ Simpson received his sentences and returned to jail, this time for a long stay, with his mostly concurrent and one consecutive jail terms. I don't know for sure if OJ is guilty of murder, but what goes around comes around, and I think this should be a sign to him. Hopefully he'll have ENOUGH time by himself to contemplate life and come to a better understanding of himself. I'm not so sure he can do that though, because it appears he believes his own lies. Time will tell. What do you think?

I did an earlier post with comments from a recent buyer at my Etsy shop. She was so nice! Today, I received a handmade thank you card from her, and I'm posting pictures of it here. The cover of the card is a photo of the hand needle felted Couch Potato Set that she purchased with an added text bubble, and a lovely, warm, and overwhelmingly sincerely appreciated note inside. I was absolutely awed; my jaw dropped! People like Marla Turner are what makes this world worth being in. What a truly wonderful person! I'm having my usual four cups worth of coffee, and I might need a nap later as usually happens when I rise so early. We have lots of snow on the ground, and it is still snowing here in the hills of the Allegheny Mountains! My car is being repaired so it will pass inspection, so I can't go anywhere, except perhaps I'll go outside and get some photos of the snow covered woodlands. I have much else to do besides that. Laundry, dishes (again), photos of projects, more felting, and looking for more work besides. A busy day ahead... What's everyone else up to?

I have been working steadily on increasing my networking skills. Today I added myself to the Blogcatalog, added some widgets, and also found some of my favorite people/sites and added them as friends or favorites. So much more left for me to do with this! But it's another in many steps I've been taking to be in touch with other artists and like minded people. So now, I need to go take care of the sink full of dirty dishes, and get back to more felting. I have several projects "in progress" and I need to get photos of one that is completed, and work on several that are not yet there! To all the fav's and friends I've added, you all deserve a high five and kudos!
